Your eyes can deceive you!

Look carefully at any of the white dots in the grid below.
How many black or grey dots can you see elsewhere in the grid? Look again!:hand:

Reliant Upon Persistance of Vision

Concentrate on the four dots in the middle of the picture for about 30 seconds.
Close your eyes, and tilt your head back.
Keep them closed... you will see a circle of light.
Continue looking at the circle... what do you see?

Your eyes have memory!

The human eye forms an image on the retina - the light sensitive part - and transfers information about the image to the brain. Just like film in a camera, this process involves reactions. The light falling on the retina stimulates nerves. It takes time for the stimulation to clear. Normally we don't look at one thing for a long period, so further stimulation happens, over-riding the last image about 20 times a second.

If we stare at things, however, things are different - especially when what we stare at has dark and light areas (as in the example here). Dark regions have little (or no) light coming from them - so no stimulation occurs. The eye grows used to the image it sees, and the nerves go on relaying the same information, over and over.
In the, initially strange, example here the brain is confused by what it sees, and tries to add detail to it. Only when you close your eyes (zero stimulation) does the fading image of Jesus of Nazareth "appear". Unexpected is the fact that his hair is dark - whereas in the image, it's bright! This is the result of over-stimulation. Some people imagine they see a colour image - in this case the result of their brain over-actively filling in missing detail.

THANKS

Straight Curves

The red, green and blue lines overlayed on the concentric circles appear to be bent. Are they?

31827

Explanation
The coloured lines are indeed straight! It's just that the closeness of the arcs alongside tricks the eye into believing they're curved.
For a proof, hold up the edge of a piece of paper to one of the lines.

Parallel Diagonal Lines

The grey lines seem to slope first up, then down. Do they?

31828

Explanation
The grey lines are indeed straight! Off-setting the black squares gives the impression of perspective, making the lines seem closer together - or further apart.
For proof, hold up the edge of a piece of paper to one of the lines, then move down to the one below, and so on.

Who is the tallest?

All the people in the image are the same size, but because they are shown in what looks like a hallway;
we perceive depth in the image . Therefore, the one furthest away seems to be the biggest.

Phantom Dots Picture

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/7690/phantomdotskp7.gif

Look at the black sqares and you'll see phantom black dots in the corners. Be sure to check out our Desktop wallpaper section and you may find a similiar optical illusion that you can use for a background to your computer.

http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/2281/mainimagerg2.gif

It may look as if the two arms of the 'X' use different shades of pink, but in fact the whole X only uses a single colour.

Explanation

The difference is that one arm of the X consists of pink squares that replace white squares in the background. Thus these pink squares are surrounded by green squares. The other arm of the X also consists of pink squares, of an identical colour, but in this case they replace green squares in the background, and are therefore surrounded by white squares.

Painters have long known that the way a colour looks in a painting is affected not only by the actual shade of the colour itself, but also by the colours that surround it.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6364/circlespiral2rp8.gif

This is another great example of concentric circles that look like a spiral. You'll see that the coloring of the circles really leads your eye right to the center of this optical illusion. You can use your finger to trace the lines of each circle, just don't get your fingerprints all over your computer monitor! The red and black diamonds further add to the illusion, and even give the illusion some depth, because they are drawn in perspective, with the center as the vanishing point. This type of perspective is called one-point perspective and involves two sides of each object pointing to the same spot on the page. This is one of my favorite optical illusions!

Warped Squares?
There are no curved lines in these figures. You can use a ruler to check it out.
The diagonal patterns created by the tiny squares distort the perception of the pictures.

Checkerboard with shadow

The squares labeled A and B are the same shade of gray !!

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5553/shadowcb3.jpg

This can be verified by joining the squares marked A and B with two vertical stripes of the same shade of gray. The illusion that B is lighter than A is caused by the relative contrast of the surrounding dark squares and by the fact that our vision compensates for the shadow of the cylinder.

Disappearing Dots

Hold your head steady and fix your eyes on the dot in the center of the picture. The colored dots will seem to disappear in a few seconds.

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/1238/fatiguemp4.jpg

The effect is due to retinal fatigue which occurs when the afterimage of an object cancels the stimulus of the object on the retina. The effect is most pronounced when the objects do not have well-defined edges that are detectable by small eye movements.

Slanted Gate

This image appears at first and second glance to be tilted to the right.
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/2554/gatemy5.jpg

The truth is though that the gate is perfectly straight up and down and all rows are perfectly horizontal.

To prove this step back from the monitor and the illusion slowly starts to fade.
