Hello mates,

Finally after 4 hours of searching and trying I was able to hook my Nokia N95 to my laptop without router and browse internet on my mobile.

Since I am a “poor person” who doesn’t have a router I tried using my laptop’s Wi-Fi Card as router or connection point between my pc and my phone.

This connection is known as “ad-hoc” connection. Ad hoc wireless networks work more like walkie-talkies, because the computers communicate directly with each other. By enabling Internet Connection Sharing on one of the computers, you can share Internet access.

To see the difference between ad-hoc and router check the picture

With ad-hoc
http://img408.imageshack.us/my.php?image=69484580ds9.gif

Now lets see what do we need:

1. We need a Wi-Fi card on the computer
2. Internet connection that doesn’t use your Wi-Fi card (example Like mine: Cable-modem connected to my laptop through LAN).

Now Let’s Setup our Wi-Fi card as router:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Network and Internet Connections.

3. Right-click your wireless network connection, and then click Properties.

4. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Wireless Networks tab.

5. Next, click the Advanced tab at the top of the window. Select Computer to computer (ad hoc) networks only and clear the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks box if it is selected. This setting, along with removing preferred networks, ensures connection to the ad hoc network only.

6. Click the Wireless Networks tab again. Under Preferred Networks, click Add,

7. In the Wireless Network Properties dialog box, specify a Network name (SSID). I chose (My Nokia N95).
[img=http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/487/37714878od7.th.gif]
8. Unclear the box “ the key is provided for me automatically”.
[img=http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/9949/86872283hs2.th.gif]
9. Type your Network key password and confirm it in the second Network key conformation box( your password has to be 5 characters or 13 characters ), Press Ok.
[img=http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/9176/10is2.th.gif]
10. After configuring the network name (SSID) in the Wireless Network Properties dialog box, the new ad hoc network will be displayed with a PC Card icon to designate that this is a computer-to-computer network. Press also Ok.
[img=http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/4931/101mu2.th.gif]
11. Right-click the Wireless Network icon in the lower right corner of your screen, and then click View Available Wireless Networks..
[img=http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/7017/12yf6.th.gif]
12 . The Wireless Network Connection window appears and displays your wireless network listed with the SSID you chose( My Nokia N95). If you don't see your network, click Refresh Network List in the upper left corner. Do not click Connect in the lower right corner.
[img=http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6600/13wm3.th.gif]

Now we have to share the internet:

14. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
[img=http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/6918/14ta5.th.gif]
15. Click Network and Internet Connections.
[img=http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/5887/15xb5.th.gif]
16. Since I have a cable modem and it connected to my laptop through LAN so must share its connection with My Wi-FI card. Right-click the Local Area Connection and press properties.
[img=http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/4872/16ck2.th.gif]
17. Now you are in Local Area Connection Properties choose tab Advanced.
[img=http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2746/17ih3.th.gif]
18 . select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
[img=http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/8369/18ve0.th.gif]

Now On Your Nokia N95 Phone (I have v20 Firmware) :

19 . Go to Menu>Tool> click on WLAN Wiz. Your Network name should appear ( in the example its “My Nokia N95”).
[img=http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6633/screenshot0004vw7.th.jpg]
20. Select Option > Start Brwosing.
[img=http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/1807/screenshot0005wj4.th.jpg]
21. Now it should ask you for the Network key password you entered in step 9 and Press OK.
[img=http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/9264/screenshot0007yk6.th.jpg]
22. Now it opened the web so I chose Nokia Nseies web site ans start browse it.
[img=http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4574/screenshot0010oq1.th.jpg]
23. While it connecting to” My Nokia N95” you should see that your phone Network status will appear Connected on your computer.
[img=http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/6197/19aw8.th.gif]

24. Wait for 30 Second and it will Open.
[img=http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/2649/screenshot0011qg4.th.jpg]

Note Important : you should turn you firewall off because it will block the connection and after you succeed connecting N95 to internet try configure your firewall so it will allow internet accesing.

Alright guys, we are already at the same point..hehe.. I just set up my Wireless Access Point for my N95 with USB wireless adapter "Kraun" some days ago.
http://flicr.us/files/j77zcz1w5sg6y6icex51.jpg

These adapters are like the built-in adapters on laptops. Cheaper than routers. We need to make it act like a router right?

-----------------------
If you have an ADSL connection this is very easy to configure.
You need to enable ICS (internet connection sharing).
Go to Network Connections, select your connection your connected to internet, right click > Properties > Advanced tab.

Check the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection.
Select the Wireless Connection from the drop down list. See the picture below.

http://flicr.us/files/ogfucxswzh3ap6ufz6h3.jpg

Check the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection. Click Settings. Check all the services you want to add and click OK > OK.

http://flicr.us/files/k2k1igpg6i8e8vn6h0fb.jpg

Now on your software for configuring your Wireless, choose Zero Configuration Utility. I am using RaLink Wireless Utility for this. Drivers and adapters may differ from others.

http://flicr.us/files/dookuhfxbtqjlvhwdznt.jpg

Now go to your Wireless LAN card.
Click Properties > Wireless Networks tab.
Click Advanced and choose Ad-hoc networks only. Follow the picture.

http://flicr.us/files/k2l3xcv55slfcwhqbkfb.jpg

On the Preferred Networks click Add.
Add a name to the SSID, in my case I called it DotSIS just for example. This is the name that will appear on wireless networks when you scan with your N95.
Network Authentication: Open
Data encryption: WEP
Uncheck The key is provided for me automatically and add a key of your own if you don't want other computers or phones to connect to your WLAN network.
Note that the key must be 5 or 13 ASCII characters.

http://flicr.us/files/jsgtkh7muq6erveqpm6v.jpg

This is almost done for the ADSL users. Now try to connect with your N95. :cheers:

------------------------------

The next step will be how to make it work on LAN connection. This is a bit pain in the @$$ to configure but you'll be familiarized easy.
We need to assign IPs manually for this, even on your access point created on your phone.
This step is by making a bridge connection of your LAN and WLAN, since ICS cannot be enabled on LAN if you don't have an IP required for automatic addressing (192.168.0.1). For those who already have this IP it is easy and can try the steps above.

http://flicr.us/files/6rjxv59zhtx8gtvajm1s.jpghttp://flicr.us/files/b4aq6at157xrff8rhvfe.jpghttp://flicr.us/files/37ihwij5sqz7wr1k53xu.jpghttp://flicr.us/files/716u0a2fthu2flke0188.jpg

This is under LAN connection. Cool not? ;)

Important note:
If you're planning to use the SIP feature over through this connection it won't work.
You need an "Infrastructure" network to work properly. You can use GizmoVOIP, tested and working with this connection. Download it from HERE (http://www.dotsis.com/mobile_phone/showthread.php?t=60358)

Thread title changed. Thread sticky.

Hey olti,
I m using the bridging method and it works perfectly fine for me, I dont have to assign the ip to my access point as I get the ip directly from my router.
And GizmoVOIP works perfectly fine for me.

Glad to know that. I get my IP from a DHCP server thats why I have problems if I leave it automatically.

And thanks for the GizmoVOIP advice, I have to try it. ;)

Edit: GizmoVOIP is working ok. The voice is a little bit like you're calling from Mars but anyway, at least it works.

Yep, is the same way.The tutorial with ADSL connection is only a way to illustrate how it works. But my intention on this thread is to help those under LAN connection.

I have an internet connection on my nokia n95 using internet enabled laptop(has wifi) which will work on desktop(has wifi) too using wifi and without wifi router and in very simple way.
To setup the adhoc(wifi) in the pc it will take too much time. However on mobile phone it is much simpler and then use connect to wifi on pc.

Here are the steps on n95 which will work on most wifi nokias:

On nokia:
1- Go to settings then connection then access points then options new access point
2- Choose a suitable connection name and wireless LAN on data bearer then adhoc in WLAN network mode(if you want to secure password-protected connection use WEP in WLAN security mode. I'll include a note at the end to explain this. You can choose default or whatever you want at remaining options)
3-Click back now and close settings and open home media
4-Go through the setup wizard here and choose the connection you created in step2 when asked to choose access point and no need for sharing and your done from mobile

Note:From now on when you want to use internet on nokia you turn on and off wifi using home media then share content then turn visibility to share or hide(Dont forget to choose hide when you are finished)

Leave the wifi enabled on mobile and continue with pc

On pc(Tested on windows xp but works on other operating systems):
1-Choose my network places on desktop(if you dont have it choose my computer and then my network places)
2- Click on set up a home or small office network and click next twice
3-Choose the first option(computer connects directly to internet and other computers use this computer to connect to internet) and click next
4-Choose the connection you use for internet on pc(modem, LAN, WIFI) and click next and then choose wireless network connection ALONE
5-Click next five times. Wait for setup and choose the fourth choice no I do not need to run settings on other pc and finish
6-Restart your computer and you are done

Note: From now on open your internet on pc and choose start then connect to then Wireless Network Connection. Right click on the Wireless Network Connection that appeared on the toolbar near the clock and choose view available wireless network. Choose the wireless network you created on mobile and connect (enter password if you created protected connection on mobile)

Now you are finished and enter any internet required program on your mobile and choose the connection you created in mobile and enjoy surfing internet

Note: To create protected connection with password go to step2 of settings in nokia and choose WEP in WLAN security mode and then choose WLAN security settings then WEP key settings and then WEP key and type a password then ok and close the settings

guys i've done a lot of research for this thread not to bother asking but it's been 4 days and i found no solution to my problem. There was an interesting point in blacksyrkh's tutorial post that i need to change all the ip values and stuff but i dont know how it works. I have a router that gives internet to two pcs both connected on ethernet and seeing each other on lan(mshome) with default settings. Got a wifi usb dongle to connect my n95 and can't get the ICS to work. When i press ok after chekcing the ics it says that another lan is using the default settings. Thanx for ur help in advance

1. When you say "I have a router that gives internet" you mean a wireless router or a switcher? So, if it is a wireless router than you can connect directly to it. No need for these steps.
2. Check your LAN status. Do you have IPs assigned automatically or manually?

nokobikini
07-23-2008, 04:06 AM
Sorry for not being mmore detailed, of course it's not wireless router or else i would have done as you said and would never need the wifi usb. My ip is asigned automatically for sure. I ve been searching on ad-hoc forums as well but i dont know what exaclty to change with my ip adresses.

Blashyrkh
07-23-2008, 04:27 AM
OK, first check your LAN status. Right click on it > Status > Support tab > click Details

Example:
http://warezimage.com/images/sbn7ojnmp5zhni6t76s4.jpg

See what IP you have and other details like Default getaway and DNS servers. Write them down.

Make a Network bridge between LAN and Wireless Card.
Now on the new bridge connection assign IP and other details manually.

Right click on bridge connection > Properties > select Internet Protocol TCP/IP > press Properties button > check Use the following IP address. Enter the details manually there.

From N95, delete other WLAN access points and start a new scan. When the SSID appears try to connect with it. Usually it doesn't work. Go to the access point created in the settings and edit it. Press Options > Advanced editing > IPV4. Enter the details the same way like in PC. But in the IP address you have to enter the next number after your IP on PC.
Example: If on PC you assigned it 192.168.0.1, in the access point you have to enter it 192.168.0.2.

If you can post your details here (IP and Default getaway) that would be helpful.

I cannot get it to work, when I bridgwe the two connections it disconnects from the internet. Tried a few other things but still no luck..My ip is 192.168.0.2 and default getaway 192.168.0.1. I also think that my problem is that the ip addresses are given automatically to my pc and the second one that's on the lan through my router which is dhcp enabled. Guess the problems is there huh? I have no clue of networks so it's impossible for me to solve it. U ve been very helpfull though Blashyrkh

katekukku
07-23-2008, 09:56 PM
Well at first wen u enable bridging,, it will disconnect from the internet, and it will create a new connection called MAC BRIDGE or somethin like that,,
then check if the internet is working on ur pc,,
if it is,, (it will)
then try to connect ur phone,,
if it is not connecting, then try to make the ad hoc connection again and make sure it is Waiting for Users to Connect to it,,

I dunno if i am posting at the right place...\
but this is just a solution for people who cant get the ad hoc connection to work at all...

i was trying to setup an ad hoc connection between my laptop and nokia e61 for web surfing and to utilize the VOIP capabilities of that phone..... but all the methods mentioned on most of the forums were not helpful for me.... the instructions made it look simple-- but for me it never worked... I happened to come across some post which had instructions to change the advanced settings for the wireless lan on e61..

Goto Tools-> Settings-> Connection-> Wireless LAN-> {click options and goto advanced settings-- disable Automatic config.}-> change the value of RTS threshold to 1500-> and change the TX power level to 10mW(try 4mW also if 10 mW doesnt work)--> disable power saving........<END>...

restart your phone first-----> then create an ad hoc connection between your pc and the phone by following instructions given in the first post on this thread.

it should work thereafter....

( this might not be a full proof solution-- but it worked for me like a charm)

Also, to utilize the VOIP capabilities ---> goto your internet connection( doesn't matter if is through router or if it is a dial-up adsl) right click and goto properties--> enter the sharing tab and allow other network users to utilize your internet...--> click the advance button next to it and check UDP and TCP......

now the voip will also work fine..

hope this would be of some help for you people...

enjoy surfing... cheers

J have done that, but my connection is much slower on the cell phone!!!
Is there any way to fix that or the network bridge has some limits which makes connection slower?
