The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison

Eleven-year-old black girl Pecola Breedlove prays for blue eyes, "each night without fail" believing her ugly reality will be made beautiful through them. She years to be beautiful so that people will look at her. Instead she is spat upon, ridiculed, and ultimately raped and impregnated by her own father. This novel by the Pulitzer prize-winning author was pulled from a high school in Alaska in 1994 and cited for being too "controversial." Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert

In 1856, after publishing Madame Bovary, Flaubert and the editors of the Revue de Paris were put on trial because Madame Bovary was considered to be morally offensive. Madame Bovary is the story of Emma Bovary, an unhappily married woman who seeks escape through forbidden relationships with other men. Ultimately, Madame Bovary's indiscretions and her obsession with Romance lead to her downfall.


Lady Chatterley's Lover - D H Lawrence

The publication of the book caused a scandal due to its explicit sex scenes, including previously banned four-letter words, and perhaps particularly because the male lover was working-class. This novel depicting a teenager's nervous breakdown has been repeatedly banned and challenged for reasons such as "profanity," "sexual references," and the charge that it "undermines morality." As recently as 1983, "the book's contents" were cited as justification to ban the book. The book chronicles Holden Caulfield's journey from innocence to experience and is the quintessential coming-of-age novel--though it's an unusual one, in which the hero tries to cling to the simplicity of childhood, achieving a kind of maturity almost in spite of himself.

For the readers who love Chetan Bhagat, here's his first novel, Five Point Someone, which is not available anywhere on the net easily... i also had a very hard time finding this one for you...

A Novel by Chetan Bhagat :read:So IIT scholars proved one more point; these guys in addition to being cerebral and earning millions in the US or Hong Kong can write novels also! Chetan Bhagat, an alumni of Delhi IIT had successfully churned out a quite an engaging novel ‘Five Point Someone’. The ambience is IIT campus of Delhi with three ‘bright’ guys who enter the most prestigious institution to found actually they are not that ‘bright’ to be the front liners. So they secure the GPA five points something, which are pretty low. But the narrator Hari, his friends Ryan and Alok try their luck to improve their grade in different ways only to end up every time in a mess.
Of the three, the story is narrated in first person by Hari, who is not that attractive, but smart enough guy to befriend the Head of the Department’s daughter. Ryan Oberoi the handsome dude, though full of creativity, wealth, style and ideas seldom has any romantic liason. Alok is a fatso and glutton and positively irritating.
Chetan Bhagat deals with these three friends who were below average guys among the crème of knowledge. It directly as well as indirectly discusses the grim side of the IIT education system, which is lauded by the elite. The disdain of the three protagonists could be the experiences of several students who have some how passed out of several IITs. Chetan Bhagat’s characterization fit the character of the present day youth most aptly; the intelligence, indifference, irreverence, irresponsibility, irritating traits all could be seen through Ryan, Hari and Alok.
It is more of reminiscences than a story. There are incidents that reveal the characters and for the sake of climax the trio indulge in a sort of dare devil and idiotic theft of the major question paper from the HOD’s room where they are caught red handed. As expected all ends well with a few more minor twists and turns as anticipated. The romantic angle is provided by Hari’s friendship to Neha, the HOD’s daughter. Neha also belongs to the new era liberated female and does not mind having sex with her boyfriend. Mind that her dad is averse to even talking to boys.
Bhagat’s narrative is racy with several punch lines, lucid and simple. We have a lot of ‘fuck’, ‘screw’ and ‘crap’ etc. uttered by the IITian ad nauseam. Even the most serious scenes there are undercurrents of hilarity and sarcasm.
The novel closes with an open ending. But one cannot be sure whether the student life is for ‘enjoyment of freedom’ or ‘labor for academics’. Even the oration of Professor Cherian at the convocation on how one should lead a student life turns out to be the dream of Hari. So it could only be a dream! Probably symbolism! It is also a moot point that whether enjoyment in student life is related to smoking pot, drinking vodka or listening to Pink Floyd. ‘Screwing’ is left to Hari only and the other two were virgins till the end!
The readers’ vocabulary may be enriched with terms like insti, prof, muggings, fatso, cog etc. exclusive to IITians.
The novel stands out because the ambience is unusual, characters are close to genuine and incidents oscillate between real and absurd. Bhagat intelligently takes every engineering student down the memory lane. Situations might not have been the same for every one; nevertheless, like Hari wishes to be Ryan, even for the nine pointers the narrated lives of five point someone would have been a wish unfulfilled.

Introduction

What makes somebody smart?

Is it raw brainpower? Accumulated knowledge? Is it just academic learning or does it also include your experiences, people skills and intuition? Intelligence is difficult to define. Although IQ tests and various exams try to measure it, deciding what makes somebody smart is hard to do. I prefer to avoid universal definitions and focus on a more practical one: Being smart means being able to learn quickly, remember a large amount of information and be able to sort that information in a way that achieves your goals. This is a much more personal definition. Learning goals can differ from person to person. You might just want to get A’s in all your courses. John might want to become a master at computer programming. Susan might want to retain more from the books she reads in her spare time. Another person might want to be able to apply concepts to business situations. It’s up to you to decide what being smart means. This book isn’t about reaching an arbitrary definition of intelligence. Rather, it’s
about giving you a strategy for learning. From this strategy, called holistic learning, I’ll provide a set of different tools to put that theory into practice. Some of these tools won’t fit your learning style or goals. That’s fine. My hopes is to provide a large assortment of tools that, with the backing of the holistic learning strategy, you can use to tailor your own approach. With practice many of these techniques can become powerful weapons in your learning arsenal. This book has two major goals. First, the holistic learning strategy should give you a model for how to learn better. Without an easily understandable theory of learning, it is difficult to make improvements. By seeing the holistic learning strategy you have a basis for identifying your weaknesses and improving the way you learn. The second objective of this book is to provide a variety of learning techniques. Throughout the book I’ll explain what these techniques are and how they fit within the holistic learning strategy. Included with this book are exercise printouts so you can practice these methods. I wish you the best of luck in all your learning efforts and hope you enjoy the book. It took a great deal of effort, tweaking and experimentation to write. Hopefully that effort has been well invested and you can improve the way you think.

Lady Chatterley's Lover - D H Lawrence

Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

This novel depicting a teenager's nervous breakdown has been repeatedly banned and challenged for reasons such as "profanity," "sexual references," and the charge that it "undermines morality." As recently as 1983, "the book's contents" were cited as justification to ban the book. The book chronicles Holden Caulfield's journey from innocence to experience and is the quintessential coming-of-age novel--though it's an unusual one, in which the hero tries to cling to the simplicity of childhood, achieving a kind of maturity almost in spite of himself.


Little Red Riding Hood
This could feature in Ripley's Believe it or not! This classic fairy tale, a favourite with children through generations, was banned by two California school districts in 1989. THey found it very disturbing that a little girl should be carrying wine for her grandmother (in one version she is carrying wine and cake for her ailing granny.

We Must look at all of the issues rationally and separate the truth from falsehood – with the help of the Almighty

When we look at the variety of false religions and deviant beliefs around the world and the zeal with which their followers uphold these beliefs, it becomes quite evident that these people are not able to find the truth because of their blind commitment of their beliefs. Their tenacious adherence is usually not based on an intellectual understanding of the teachings, but on powerful cultural and emotional influences. Because they were brought up in a particular family or society, they firmly cling to the beliefs of that society, believing that they are upholding the truth.

The only way that we may find the truth about anything is to approach it systematically and logically. First, we weigh the evidence and then we judge it by the intelligence which God has given us. In the material world, it fundamentally intelligence that distinguishes humans from animals, which act purely on instinct. Wizard at Large
It all began when the half-able wizard Questor Thews announced that finally he could restore the Court Scribe Abernathy to human form. It was his spell that had turned Abernathy into a Wheaten Terrier - though still able to talk.

All went well - until the wizard breathed the magic dust of his spell and suddenly sneezed. Then, where Abernathy had stood, there was only a bottle containing a particularly evil imp. It had been in the collection of Michel Ard Rhi, former King of Landover, now exiled to Earth. Abernathy must now be a part of that collection!

High Lord Ben Holiday set forth for Earth, taking his green but beautiful love, Willow, with him. Unfortunately, they were long in returning. And without the soil of Landover in which to root as a tree at times, Willow could not long survive.

That left it up to Questor Thews to save them. Grimly he set out to seek help, knowing himself to be incompetent. And to make things worse, the imp had escaped and sought the help of the evil witch Nightshade, now back from exile in Faerie. Questor's only idea seemed impossible, but . . .

Some hackers destroy people's files or entire hard drives; they're called crackers or vandals. Some novice hackers don't bother learning the technology, but simply download hacker tools to break into computer systems; they're called script kiddies. More experienced hackers with programming skills develop hacker programs and post them to the Web and to bulletin board systems. And then there are individuals who have no interest in the technology, but use the computer merely as a tool to aid them in stealing money, goods, or services. Despite the media-created myth of Kevin Mitnick, I am not a malicious hacker. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

STARTING OUT
My path was probably set early in life. I was a happy-go-lucky kid, but bored. After my father split when I was three, my mother worked as a waitress to support us. To see me then - an only child being raised by a mother who put in long, harried days on a sometimes-erratic schedule - would have been to see a youngster on his own almost all his waking hours. I was my own babysitter. Growing up in a San Fernando Valley community gave me the whole of Los Angeles to explore, and by the age of twelve I had discovered a way to travel free throughout the whole greater L.A. area. I realized one day while riding the bus that the security of the bus transfer I had purchased relied on the unusual pattern of the paper-punch, that the drivers used to mark day; time, and route on the transfer slips. A friendly driver, answering my carefully planted question, told me where to buy that special type of punch. The transfers are meant to let you change buses and continue a journey to your destination, but I worked out how to
use them to travel anywhere I wanted to go for free. Obtaining blank transfers was a walk in the park..............

If you're looking for quick answers and a linear narrative, numerous hair raising events, surgical extractions of implants, and analytical discussions on what those little guys are doing invading our homes and bodies, you're going to be disappointed. But if you want a meaningful answer as to what those little guys are doing invading our homes and bodies, you'll get it, as Lt. Colonel Philip Corso would say, if you can take it. Vaeni's style is quirky and engaging, and restlessly jumps from one expositional form to another, making his points in the style he deems best suited for the moment. The "spine" of the book is the use of an ongoing interview -- a device employed by no less than Aristotle in his Dialogues -- between a "Norm De Plume" and himself. Beyond this, the book is a kaleidoscope of prose techniques, including news clippings, poems, and both first and third person narratives. Though not born of blogging and the internet, his style suits the blogosphere well -- quick, punchy, and irreverent. We get to know Vaeni in candid -- even explicit -- detail.


He engages us quickly. We get to know and care about him, and because of this we are willing to follow down the twists and turns of his story. The payoff of the book is long in coming, and this reader found this distracting. Though enjoined in the author's introduction to not read but to experience the book, I began to find the teasing detours and the crazy quilt of the prose a bit tedious. Hitting Chapter 11 and confronted with the title "time out for song, poem, story, and ranting" (page 50) I lost patience with it and jumped to the end of the book and skimmed back to find an unwavering discussion on the subject of aliens pick up at Chapter 53, page 310 out of the book's 381. And yet, I went back to read the rest. What at first blush appear to be long digressions on unrelated matters -- his emotionally torturous love life as a high school student and young adult, coming to (and living through the culture shock) of New York City, a very long narrative about his career at Nickelodeon studios and an intensely frustrating affair -- give us context, helps us understand the paradoxical nature of Vaeni's struggles, and adds to the overall ambience. (I will never be able to think about Nickelodeon as anything other than a corporate political nightmare again.) These same needs could probably have been fulfilled more quickly, and possibly more effectively -- the fiction writer in me would wanted to have seen a more linear narrative, demonstrating the interplay between the personal events of his life and the paranormal ones. One could argue these tangents help exposition the human condition, one of the overall points of the book, but can't help but feel like uncorrelated -- albeit absorbing -- digressions. Despite the book's flaws, it is an engaging book for two reasons Vaeni is an excellent writer. He engages, he plays, he doesn't rest. The vitality of his prose never flags. He has understood the painfully obvious fundamental (and all-too-frequently ignored) rule of writing: a writer's work needs to be interesting. Beyond this, the real strength of I Know Why the Aliens Don't Land! is the personality and "personableness" of the narrator. It comes through clearly. PREFACE
Some hackers destroy people's files or entire hard drives; they're called crackers or vandals. Some novice hackers don't bother learning the technology, but simply download hacker tools to break into computer systems; they're called script kiddies. More experienced hackers with programming skills develop hacker programs and post them to the Web and to bulletin board systems. And then there are individuals who have no interest in the technology, but use the computer merely as a tool to aid them in stealing money, goods, or services. Despite the media-created myth of Kevin Mitnick, I am not a malicious hacker. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

STARTING OUT
My path was probably set early in life. I was a happy-go-lucky kid, but bored. After my father split when I was three, my mother worked as a waitress to support us. To see me then - an only child being raised by a mother who put in long, harried days on a sometimes-erratic schedule - would have been to see a youngster on his own almost all his waking hours. I was my own babysitter. Growing up in a San Fernando Valley community gave me the whole of Los Angeles to explore, and by the age of twelve I had discovered a way to travel free throughout the whole greater L.A. area. I realized one day while riding the bus that the security of the bus transfer I had purchased relied on the unusual pattern of the paper-punch, that the drivers used to mark day; time, and route on the transfer slips. A friendly driver, answering my carefully planted question, told me where to buy that special type of punch. The transfers are meant to let you change buses and continue a journey to your destination, but I worked out how to
use them to travel anywhere I wanted to go for free. Obtaining blank transfers was a walk in the park..............

How To Approach And Understand The Qur'an: Since many Muslims desire to read the Quran as often as they can, it becomes of vital importance to know what conditions might exist for the reciting or touching of the Quran. This book explains if and when there are times or occasions in which a Muslim is not allowed to recite or touch the Quran due to being in a state of "impurity".

Introduction:
The Quran must play a central role in the life of every Muslim. Muslims should turn to the Quran and
read it on a daily basis, if possible. Since many Muslims desire to read the Quran as often as they can,
it becomes of vital importance to know what conditions might exist for the reciting or touching of the
Quran. That is, are there some times or occasions in which a Muslim is not allowed to recite or touch
the Quran due to being in a state of "impurity"?
This question is obviously of extreme importance for Muslim sisters. They are the ones who will be
most affected by the answer to this question since they have long periods of "impurity" (menstruation
and post partum bleeding). If it can be shown that they are not allowed to touch the Quran during such
states, they must not do so as an act of obedience to Allah. However, if such is not found to be true,
then they may be prevented from the important act of reading the Quran because of a
misunderstanding or wrong fiqh conclusion.
Unfortunately, although this is a very important question, many different opinions abound on this
question. Each opinion, obviously, has some evidence for it. Therefore, in order to make an intelligent
conclusion concerning this question, all of the different evidences must be dealt with and weighed.
Only after that process may one make a conclusion on this matter. An attempt shall be made here to
cover all of the major different opinions on this question as well as discuss which seems to be the
weightiest.
Actually, two questions need to be answered and each shall be dealt with separately. These two
questions are the following:

(1) What are the requirements of tahara (being in a state of ritual purity), if any, for reciting the
Quran? (This is in reference to simply reciting the Quran, for example, from memory, without
actually touching a physical copy of the Quran.) Must one be free of both major and minor
impurities or is freedom from major impurities alone sufficient?
(2) What are the requirements of tahara, if any, for touching the Quran?

Again, must one be free of both major and minor impurities or is freedom from major impurities
sufficient? [1] (check the footnotes)

Note that this article is only concerned with the "requirement" of being in a state of purity. It is not
concerned with the recommendation or behavior of reading the Quran [2]. Scholars such as Imam
Malik used to always like to be in a state of purity even while teaching the hadith of the Prophet
(peace be upon him). In fact, that is mentioned as one of the recommended acts for teaching hadith.
This is not because such is a requirement for teaching hadith. This was, however, to show respect to
the subject being taught. Similarly, as was discussed in the earlier referred to article, being in a state of
purity while reading the Quran will affect one's frame of mind and outlook. It will, Allah willing, help
the person benefit more from the Quran. Again, that is a separate question from what is being
discussed here.

Time Magazine described Shaykh Abdullah Azzam as the man who wasthe ' reviver of Jihad in the 20th Century'. Abdullah Yusuf Azzam was born in the village of Ass-ba'ah Al-Hartiyeh, province of Jineen in the occupied sacred land of Palestine in 1941 CE. He was brought up in a humble house where he was taught Islam, and was fed with the love of Allah, His Messenger (saw), those striving in the Way of Allah, the righteous people and the desire for the Hereafter. Sheikh Abdullah Azzam was one of the first Arabs to join the Afghan Jihad against the communist USSRIn 1979, when he learned about the Afghan Jihad, he left his teaching position at King Abdul-Aziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and went to Islamabad, Pakistan, in order to be able to participate in the Jihad. He was a fine example of Islamic manners, in his piety, his devotion to Allah and his modesty in all things. He would never adulate in his relations with others. Shaykh Azzam always listened to the youth, he was dignified and did not allow fear to have access to his brave heart. He practised continual fasting especially the alternate daily fasting routine of Prophet Dawud (as). He strongly counselled others to practice fasting on Mondays and Thursdays. The Shaykh was a man of uprightness, honesty and virtue, and was never heard to slander others or to talk unpleaasently about an individual Muslim. On 24 November 1989. The enemies of Allah planted three bombs on a road so narrow only a single car could travel on it. It was the road Shaykh Abdullah Azzam would use to drive to the Friday Prayer. That Friday, the Shaykh together with two of his own sons, Ibrahim and Muhammad, and with one of the sons of the late Shaykh Tameem Adnani drove along the road. The car stopped at the position of the first bomb, and the Sheikh alighted to walk the remainder of the way. The enemies, lying in wait, then exploded the bomb. A loud explosion and a great thundering were heard all over the city. People emerged from the mosque, and beheld a terrible scene. Only a small fragment of the car remained. The young son Ibrahim flew 100 metres into the air; the other two youths were thrown a similar distance away, and their remains were scattered among the trees and power lines.
