It's been just over a year since EA took the wraps off its game based on The Godfather, surely one of the most important and revered films in American history. Since then, we've seen the film's principal cast join the game's voice-over lineup (which subsequently suffered a bit of a setback); Francis Ford Coppola lashing out at the idea of a game based on his film; and a delay that pushed the game back into 2006 release territory. Obviously, this is a news-making game--but is it any good? In order to get the early scoop, we've gone hands-on with a nearly finished version of The Godfather to find out.
Since The Godfather presents such a character-driven story, we were hoping to see a lot of those characters throughout the video game version, and so far, the lineup has all been here. The Corleones (Sonny, Michael, and Don Vito himself) are front and center, along with family consigliere Tom Hagen, and goons like Luca Brasi, Paulie Gatto, and Monk Malone. With the exception of Michael, all the characters bear their classic likenesses, and Sonny and Tom Hagen are even voiced by James Caan and Robert Duvall, respectively. Generally, the game seems to have re-created the social and criminal hierarchy of the film fairly well so far.
Extremely impressive from a technical standpoint yet behind the times from a first-person-shooter design standpoint: This is the dichotomy that is Doom 3, the long-awaited sequel from well-known Texas-based developer id Software. Doom 3 is quite possibly the best-looking game ever, thanks to the brand-new 3D graphics engine used to generate its convincingly lifelike, densely atmospheric, and surprisingly expansive environments. At the same time, when you look past the spectacular appearance, you’ll find a conventional, derivative shooter. In fact, if you played the original Doom or its sequel back in the mid ’90s (or any popular ’90s-era shooter, for that matter), you may be shocked by how similarly Doom 3 plays to those games. The legions of id Software’s true believers will celebrate this straightforwardness as being deliberately “old school,” especially since Doom 3 is packed with direct references to its classic predecessors. However, the truth of the matter is that Doom 3’s gameplay structure and level design are behind the times and very much at odds with the game’s cutting-edge, ultrarealistic looks. Yet the quality of the presentation truly is remarkable–enough so that it overwhelms Doom 3’s occasional problems.
The fourth in the chilling Hitman series featuring the cold-blooded killer Agent 47. Finding that members of his contract agency, The ICA, are now being quietly (and mortally) eliminated, Agent 47 suspects a larger organization is moving in. Fearing he may be the next target, he heads to America. His jobs now will pay in straight-up cash — and how he spends the money will affect what weapons he has and what he does next. The developer added new gameplay systems, such as the concepts of notoriety and of blood money. The new Notoriety system means that anyone causing a bloodbath worthy of front page news is risking being recognised by civilians and guards in the future. Blood money lets players spend their earnings on fully customisable precision weapons and specialist equipment, or they can buy additional information upon the targets and location at hand, to aid a successful and professional hit.
