[XBOX] Oddworld Stranger's Wrath

A stunning and exquisitely realized masterpiece that delivers a gaming experience unlike any that we've seen before, Stranger's Wrath rekindles the artistic allure of Oddworld's previous works, and is truly visionary in its delivery of gameplay. Once you set foot in this imaginative world, you won't want to leave it.

Players assume the identity of the Stranger; a drifter turned bounty hunter that hides a secret that requires a specific, yet unrevealed, surgical procedure costing twenty grand. With each criminal that you bring to justice, you'll inch closer to this goal – a goal that leads to a shocking twist in the game. I gasped when I found out exactly what the Stranger was hiding.

Leading up to this point, the majority of your time is spent chasing down wanted criminals. By communicating with villagers via a streamlined Gamespeak system, players will learn the location of their targets, among other amusing things. The new Gamespeak interface is not as complex as it has been in previous Oddworld titles – it now requires just one button press – but it is just as humorous. I was often in tears over some of the things that were being said between Stranger and the inhabitants of this crazy world.

As remarkable as the presentation is, the true star of this title is gameplay. I was blown away by the game's ability to seamlessly transition between frenzied FPS and harrowing third-person platforming. Oddworld has also created a highly innovative ammo system. Not only are you using wildlife as "live" ammo, you actually have to scour your surroundings and hunt for more munitions. The ammo that you unload produces a variety of results. Firing a Bolamite at a foe will tie them up in sticky webbing. Stunkz scent will make anyone near it gag. Boombats explode. And the Chippunk is just so darn cute that enemies will go to any length to squish it. Boss fights are demanding of different strategies, and even the way that the health system is managed is a complete departure from what we are accustomed to, as you shake off damage like a wet dog does water. All told, the gameplay package is creative, fun, and the perfect fit for an Oddworld game.

If you are of the belief that you've seen everything that video games have to offer, getting to know the Stranger will make you realize that we haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what can be done in game development.

[XBOX] Gun Valkyrie

GUNVALKYRIE, from Sega is a beautiful game, set in a fantastic electric-punk alternative 1800's world. The graphics are astonishingly beautiful, the action is fast and frenetic, and the missions are reasonably varied, and fun.

All this comes at a price, however.

In an effort to fully utilize the xbox's controller, Smilebit has come up with a control scheme that is as versatile as it is difficult to learn. While you'll be giggling with unabashed glee as you leap into the air, jump over an enemy, blast it to pieces, cartwheel to the side, turn to the left, and fill a handful of aliens full of lead (or whatever it is your gun shoots), all in the span of maybe half a second, and all in one fluid motion, it's not easy to get to the point where you're that familiar with the controls.

In essence, the left analog stick controls your body, and the right analog stick controls the direction your arms (and thus, gun) face. Left trigger jumps, right trigger shoots, face buttons switch weapons. But it's way more complex than that, because of the analog stick clicks, which add a whole new world of complexity to the controls. Click on the left stick and move, and you'll "boost dash", either forward, to the side, or backwards. Click on the left stick, and you'll change facing, in 90 degree increments, depending on which direction the stick's pointed in.

So, while you'll be able to execute that jump-dash forward-shoot-cartwheel-turn-shoot move, it'll require you to left trigger/left stick click forward/right trigger/left stick click right/right click stick left, all in sequence. Rewarding, but again, difficult.

Once you've invested the time, though, GV's an incredible experience. You'll start on the ground, running from the bugs, but by the end of the game, your feet won't even ever touch the ground.

A unique, fast-paced experience, full of interesting levels, and a really unique world. If you can deal with the difficult controls, you'll be well rewarded with an action game unlike anything ever made.

[XBOX] Pro Evolution Soccer 5

It goes without saying, but we love saying it anyway - Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (PES 5) makes the best even better. With the new licensed teams, new trademark moves, massively expanded Master League and variable weather conditions, PES 5 ensures that console football is even closer to the real thing.

The best part is, you don't even need to take our word for it...

Arsenal's Thierry Henry, and Chelsea's John Terry, will be staring out from the box when Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is launched, this autumn. The two men, both at the top of their game in the world famous Premiership, are die-hard fans of PES and proud to be involved.

Thierry Henry has admitted: "I have been playing Pro Evolution Soccer games for over 10 years now." He also revealed how much he has enjoyed representing the game since PES 4. "It was great to be the face of such a realistic and engrossing football title, so I was delighted to return for the newest version," he said. "I look forward to being closely involved with the creation and promotion of what promises to be a stunning game."

Premiership champion, John Terry, says: "I've been a massive fan of Pro Evolution Soccer for years now and am really pleased to be able to work with the talented people behind such a fantastic game." More than that, 'JT' also claims that PES is, "the game of choice for lots of players as it is so true to the real thing," adding that, "I'm looking forward to getting involved with the launch of this fifth and best version in the coming months - and getting to play advance versions on the way!"

We've all got so much to look forward to, starting with the retuned controls giving players more control over weighted passes, one-twos, and so on. This ties in neatly with the improved animation, which not only looks more realistic, but requires you to time kicks and shots perfectly for maximum power - you're more likely to scuff the ball and make weak, inaccurate shots if you attempt to play them while off balance or out of step.

In order for you to enjoy the full benefit of the updated controls, Training Mode is extended - rewarding efforts with points used to unlock secrets within the game.

The new licensed clubs are all meticulously detailed, including the authentic representation of names and numbers on their backs. You'll find the most famous players bear an astonishing resemblance to the real thing. Increased detail in all players has been transferred to the Player Design mode, which has been hugely expanded to include more factors determining skill and ability.

Master League, in which you guide a lowly team to glory, now allows player-managers to monitor individual players and see when their health declines.

In all games, weather conditions can be set to 'variable', leading to patchy rain or snow. The new weather conditions further enhance the realism and unpredictable nature of PES matches. Rain or shine, PES 5 will be the greatest console football you've ever experienced.

[XBOX] Star Wars: Republic Commando

Over the years, we have sliced through Imperial forces with twirling lightsabers, given in to the tantalizing power of the Dark Side, and destroyed the Death Star more times than George Lucas has worn his favorite flannel. With a setting that Tom Clancy wouldn't mind endorsing, Republic Commando emerges as a great departure for Star Wars gaming, and a breath of fresh air that fans have been dreaming of since they first watched a squadron of storm troopers obliterate a hapless crew aboard the Tantive IV blockade runner.

There are no backdoor drafts in the Republic. Born of the genetic stock of the galaxy's most feared bounty hunter, you were created with the specific intent of serving your people through bloodshed and war. Your appearance is identical to that of your brethren, who number in the millions, but your physical prowess has been heightened far beyond theirs. You are the best of the best. You are one of the Clone Trooper elite. Assigned as the leader of an upper echelon Republic Commando division, you must lead your squad to victory in the face of unyielding adversity.

As you unload countless rounds into a Separatist onslaught, you can send your sharpshooter to a sniper point, tell your hacker to open a door, and order your weapons expert to light up the droid forces with a well a placed Thermal Detonator. The on-the-fly squad control may sound fairly complex, but the system that LucasArts has developed couldn't be easier to use. With this said, you won't have complete control over the actions of your cohorts. Outside of simple commands like "form up" and "attack this target," you can only send them to areas that are assigned to specific tasks such as sniping or hacking – all with the click of a button. If you take on too much damage and go down, you can even signal to a teammate to revive you with a quick resuscitation. Thanks to impressive AI, you never really have to worry about your troops doing something stupid. The only flak you can send their way is for being too cowardly when an enemy is clearly not paying attention to them, and for not being able to recognize the greatest threat on the battlefield unless you point it out to them.

Although the controls fit as comfortably as Master Chief's glove, the targeting system is too demanding of precision, especially when you are required to unload dozens of rounds into certain enemy types. If you don't have armor-breaking rounds, a Super Battle Droid can be just as annoying as the new dance number in Return of the Jedi. Airborne foes are also quite difficult to tag at a successful rate.

While not a sure-fire marksman, Republic Commando still has enough kick in its firepower to knock you off of your feet. From explosive scripted events on the battlefield to harrowing battles that are almost too intense to comprehend, each mission is filled with relentless excitement and moments that you'll cherish for a lifetime. Whether you watch a Wookiee physically dismantle a Super Battle Droid or hold your breath as you rely on your troops to provide over a minute of cover fire as you hack a security terminal, Republic Commando seamlessly blends breathtaking spectacles with uniquely styled and highly contagious gameplay. The sound (sans the metal during the end credits) is remarkable as well.

At the same time, however, you can't help but criticize the game for its limited number of enemy types (I seriously felt like I destroyed at least 10,000 Battle Droids), noticeably absent story breaks, and lackluster multiplayer deathmatching. Furthermore, why didn't LucasArts do online co-op? It's a perfect fit.

It does tie into the upcoming Revenge of the Sith movie, but the Episode III content is more of a lightsaber tease than anything. General Grievous is literally in the game for two seconds, and just as you are about to join the pivotal battle of Kashyyyk, the game comes to an end, basically saying, "This looks awesome, doesn't it? Buy a ticket to the movie and you'll see how it unfolds."

No lightsabers? No problem. A Star Wars game without Jedi may seem like a Jar Jar-sized disaster, but I don't think even Master Yoda could dodge a nicely placed sniper shot by this incredible Republic Commando unit.

[XBOX] Burnout

Like your racing games fast, furious, and full of spectacular smashes? You're in luck. With Burnout, Acclaim removes all pretense of providing a serious simulation and instead serves up a delicious dish of pure arcade fun. The title features two key selling points--the speed of the action and the spectacular crashes. To facilitate these, the setup couldn't be more straightforward, as the aim is simply to be first past the post. You can increase your chances by driving more dangerously, although that comes with obvious pitfalls in the shape of those aforementioned smashes. Let's just say that to get through the game you're going to have to take your chances.

Contrary to the serious approach of racing simulators like Gran Turismo 3 for the PlayStation2, this is foot-to-the-pedal stuff, and it's tremendously good fun to play. And when you do put your proverbial foot down, get ready to move, for this is a blisteringly fast title that deceptively requires more concentration than at first appears. The downside is that this won't appeal to those who like their racing games nice and serious, nor to those looking for anything particularly innovative. Burnout has few qualms about marrying the multimedia power of next-generation game systems to a game engine that forsakes bells and whistles for speed, destruction, and sheer good fun. Fortunately, in this case, it's all the better for it, making it yet another four-wheel treat. Highly recommended.
