View Full Version : Oxford Medical Dictionary for phones with 1 MB JAR limit!!!

I have modified and uploaded a version of Oxford Medical dictionary that works on phones with an 1 MB java limit (eg. Nokia 6233, 6300, 5300 etc.) I have essentially split the dictionary into two files, and thus it can work on all the phones.
This dictionary is a must have for all medical students across the globe. I undertook this project since I have a 6233 on which this software didn't work. Now I have modified it to work on all phones!
Simply download the attached .rar file, extract it on to your computer somewhere with winrar (free software, just google for it), read the attached README.txt file, follow the instructions, transfer the .jar files to your phone, and you're good to go!
IMPORTANT!!! Be sure to read the README.txt that is attached, since it contains the usage instructions before using the dictionary. Since I am a medical student and not a programmer, there are a few tweaks and errors, so read the readme first to know how to use the software.
Enjoy, help spread this software, and be sure to thank!

There's no such thing as java memory specifically. Just make sure there is enough free memory in your memory card, transfer it there and run from there. Also free up some space in your phone memory by deleting your sms inbox, or moving things like pictures to your memory card.

You can bypass the 1mb jar limit.
Change extension of file to .jpg and copy into the memory card. Once it's copied change it back to .jar
it will work perfectly fine. No need to split files etc.

Go to tools.. folder options and uncheck HIDE EXTENSIONS OF KNOWN FILE TYPES.
Once you do that.. you will see the extension .JAR infront of the file name. Change it to .jpg

If the file size is bigger than 1mb and you have a restriction of 1mb on the phone then it wont copy. You will have to change extension to copy it.

THANKS BRO
BUT I CAN COPY ANY JAR FILE LARGER THAN 1 MB IN MY MEMORY CARD, BUT AFTER THAT WHEN I TRY TO OPEN THAT FILE A BLUE SQUARE WITH A CENTRAL RED X MARK APPEARS.
WHEN I CHANGED THE EXTENSION NAM3E TO .jpg THEN IT APPEARS AS A YELLOW SQUARE WITH A ? MARK ON IT THAT INDICATES IT CANNOT BE IDENTIFIED!
MOREOVER I CANNOT CHANGE THE EXTENSION NAME BACK TO .jar WITHIN THE PHONE.
I AM USING 6233 MODEL.
SO IS THERE ANY SOLUTION?

Ok its been a while since Ive logged in but I've been reading some of the comments and this is what Ive gathered:
1. Some of you are trying to put the .rar file which ive uploaded directly into the phone. You CANNOT do this! You have to get a program called winrar which you can download for free. Winrar will extract the file to somewhere on the computer where you specify. The extracted files will contain the two .jar files which you have to transfer to your phone. These two files will be the dictionary files.
2. No matter what others say, you CANNOT bypass the 1 mb limit by simply renaming the file to jpg and back to jar. Renaming the file back and forth will allow you to transfer the file to your phone without problem, but when you try and run the file it will say that the file is invalid or whatever. Ive created the split version of the dictionary to bypass this.
3. I did not use any software or what not to split this dictionary. I went through the lines of java of different files with the simple notepad program that comes with windows, kinda figured out how it worked, and simply modified the libraries of definitions and its pointers till it worked. It was a few days of try and fail but finally worked, but its not something I can repeat for other softwares since Im not a computer programmer by any means, sorry.
4. Thanks for all the appreciation Ive gotten for this file, I really appreciate all of your feedback!

help the 2nd part the haemati to z isnt working, i still dont get to search anything pls help me i get error null
I covered this in the attached readme.txt file in the download:
DICTIONARY 1:
- This contains the definitions of all entries from A to Haematin.
The start screen and everything is normal. The only problem is that since it only
contains definitions from A to Haematin, if you search for anything that
alphabetically comes after Haematin (eg. the letter "I", or "J", etc.) then
you get an error message stating "Error, Null". If this occurs, simply
exit the dictionary and restart it and it will work fine.
*Dictionary 2:
- This contains the definitions of all entries from Haematinic to Z.
The initial screen will actually appear blank as if there are no definitions,
but simply ignore this. The words will appear as you search for them. Since
this dictionary only contains entries for words after haematinic, if you search
for anything that comes alphabetically before haematinic (eg. the letter "A", "B",
or "haematin") then you get the same error message "Error, Null". But you don't
need to restart the dictionary, simply press OK and search for something that
comes alphabetically after Haematinics (eg. "I",or "J", or "Haematinica" or
"Hydrocele") and the dictionary will show you the corresponding entries.
