Nestopia
http://static.emulator-zone.com/gallery/emulators/nes/nestopia/nestopia.png
Nestopia is one of the best Nintendo/Famicom emulators available, it’s an open source emulator and it gets updated frequently. The Windows port has been completely rewritten from scratch, which means it has been improved, also the emulation core has changed completely.
It has a great game compatibility list and the supported controllers make this emulator a nice option for playing your favorite games.
Another great thing about this emulator is that netplay is supported through the Kaillera network. Just remember before you start playing games in netplay, make sure that you and your gaming pals are using the same emulation settings.
The minimum requirements are:
*Processor: Pentium MMX or comparable AMD
*Ram: 64MB
*Video: Direct3D 9.0 compatible graphic card.
*OS: Windows 98/Me/2000/XP
*Software Installed: DirectX 9.0c or superior.

Jnes 0.6
http://static.emulator-zone.com/gallery//emulators/nes/jnes/jpark/thumbs/01_t.jpg
This is a cool Nintendo NES emulator for Windows.
The system requirements are higher compared to other emulators. Jnes requires at least a Pentium 133 (MMX prefered) and a good video card with 2D acceleration.
For Jnes to work properly, you also need to have the latest drivers (video, sound, DirectX) installed. Failing to do so might cause strange problems.

FCE Ultra 0.98.12
http://static.emulator-zone.com/gallery//emulators/nes/fceultra/tetris/01.gif
FCE Ultra is back again on this site. When I started this site I added this emulator, which at that time was only for DOS. But I removed it later again because I didn't think it was that good. Since that time however FCE Ultra has gone open source (which means anyone with the right skills can contribute to it) and it has been ported to Windows.
I tried it again after a forum member told me he thought it was good - and he was right: FCE Ultra has been much improved and is a great NES emulator now.
Unfortunately in November 2002 the author of FCE Ultra, Xodnizel, decided to stop working on it as he feels most major goals for it were reached and he has lost the desire to continue to work on it. But don't let this discourage you - although we may not see any new versions, the last version is still one of the best NES emulators available.
Tip: Before you start playing I recommend you reconfigure the controls (Config->Input in the menu) as the default keys didn't work right (for me at least).

Nesticle
I fondly remember Nesticle as one of the first emulators I ever tried. Back in those days (1997) it was already able to play many NES games properly and fast, even on the poor hardware I had at the time (a 486).
It may have a funny name and a weird mouse cursor, this emulator is what revolutionized the world of emulation back in it's time. Unfortunately after part of the Nesticle source was leaked it was discontinued, but it still remains one of the best NES emulators currently available.
The latest version of Nesticle is X.XX, but is for DOS only. The latest Windows version is included with version 0.42. The DOS versions of Nesticle require the memory extender DOS/4GW to run. Just extract this file into the same directory as Nesticle. You won't need DOS/4GW for the Windows version of Nesticle.

VirtuaNES 0.93 --278 KB
VirtuaNES is a relatively new NES emulator from Japanese origin. Fortunately there is an English version of it though. Being newer than other NES emulators doesn't mean it's bad, on the contrary in fact. It supports full CPU and sound emulation.
As with most emulators for Windows, VirtuaNES requires a recent version of DirectX. Being a NES emulator it doesn't require a very fast PC though.

NESten
NESten is a very nice Nintendo NES emulator which supports a reasonble amount of memory mappers and sound.
NESten was written to see if it was possible to write a NES emulator in Delphi. As you can see by the result, it is quite possible!
NESten is quite fast (for a NES emulator. for Windows). It can run at full speed on a Pentium 166 with full sound.

NesterJ is part of the Nester family, a group of emulators based on the emulator NesterJ created by Darren Ranalli. As you might have guessed from the "J" in the name, this spin off is of Japanese origin. Fortunately it is in English though.

RockNES
http://static.emulator-zone.com/gallery//emulators/nes/rocknes/dbz3/01.gif
This is a nice emulator with many features, including a "eagle" mode which should make games look better. On my old PC I noticed RockNES wasn't particulary fast. But with both the advance of PC's and RockNES the speed difference (compared to other emulators) should be neglible.
After the first run, RockNES creates a ROCKNES.CFG file which can be edited with any text editor to set options for sound, video, controllers etc.
RockNES also supports the Game Genie, see the ROCKNES.TXT file included in the ZIP file for more information on how to use Game Genie codes with RockNES.

Nintendulator
Nintendulator started out as NinthStar NES, written by David "Akilla" De Regt. Written in C++, it was a reasonably accurate (and slow) NES emulator which used NESten 0.61's mapper DLLs. Numerous other systems were planned to be emulated within NinthStar (as well as complex debuggers for each of them), but somewhere along the line, the project was abandoned.
At that point, I took the existing NES sources and started improving them. First, the PPU was rewritten to be much more accurate than before, running cycle-by-cycle according to documentation that had been released at the time. After that, the CPU was rewritten to execute instructions more accurately. Then the APU was mostly completed, giving the emulator proper sound. Somewhere along the line, it was determined that the C++ usage in the code was very poorly done and was slowing the program down, so I converted it to plain C and named the program "Nintendulator".
The eventual goal of Nintendulator is to be *the* most accurate NES emulator, right down to the hardware quirks. In the meanwhile, it can certainly be used to test NES code with confidence that if it works properly in Nintendulator, it will probably work properly on the real hardware as well.

fwNES 0.302
Possibly the best Nintendo NES emulator available. It's compatible with an enormous amount of games, more than any other emulator. Although this emulator is for DOS, it has a nice, but slightly weird GUI, so you don't need to use the command line.
One drawback is that it hasn't been updated in ages. This could mean there won't be anymore updates, which is too bad. However the README.TXT file says an update won't come soon so maybe...
